The "Georgian Times" interview on CD edition of Rustaveli's PoemMultimedia Era of "The Knight in the Tiger Skin" - grab Rustaveli's great epic poem on CDBy Rusudan Kbilashvili
Shota Rustaveli was the greatest Georgian poet of the 12th century. There are no written records of his life, and the only authentic record we possess of him is his epic poem, "The Knight in the Tiger Skin", in the introduction to which the poet, incidentally, remarks that he is a contemporary of Queen Tamar. It was the golden age of the Georgian empire and the renascence of its cultural life. GT spoke with Levan Chaganava for more details on the multimedia edition. Q: When was this new CD released, and what is on it besides the full text? A: The multimedia edition of the poem was first presented at the Tbilisi book festival in May 2005. In the complete edition, packed in a transparent box, there are CD & calligraphic souvenirs for wall display. The compact disc includes the full text of poem, 17th-18th century miniatures, wallpapers, audio-screensavers, e-mail greetings, puzzles and games. The calligraphy souvenir includes a miniature from the poem with Georgian manuscript text on one side and English text on the other. I made more than 52 manuscript souvenirs with calligraphic texts and 18th century miniatures. All of these images and my original 21st century manuscripts are also included in the CD edition. This was the main condition for creating the multimedia edition, because I thought the 21st century edition of "The Knight in the Tiger Skin" should contain in itself both ancient and modern methods and techniques of book art. Q: Whose illustrations are used? A: There 17th-18th century anonymous Persian school miniatures. Apparently, a rather skilled foreign artist was invited for this work. His work is simply amazing. Some miniatures even surpass other famous Persian illustrations of the world. People everyone should see them. I have placed them on my studio's web site with other samples of the multimedia edition. To promote the miniatures and Georgian calligraphic art in the edition, I've included screensavers, wallpapers, e-mail greetings and puzzle games. Q: Where can people buy the CD? A: It is available to order from the Studio, or at Tbilisi book shops. Q: Whose idea was it to create the Multimedia Edition of the poem? A: This edition is devoted to the 800th anniversary of the poem's creation (from 2005 to 2007). In fact, people have copied the poem by hand throughout the centuries, and it seemed to me that it was necessary to use this approach before creating a computer version of poem. Only in this way was it possible to enrich the edition and to express gratitude as to the author of a poem and to all our ancestors whose manual labour brought the texts of this famous poem to us. This multimedia edition will tell future generations that calligraphy and book art of our ancestors was alive in the 21st century, and that creativity was continuing through new achievements in science. What better idea to energise the work process? Q: In what languages is the poem available on the CD and whose English translation of the poem is used? A: I've issued editions in English and in Georgian separately. The English translation is by Marjory Scott Wardrop. Q: Do you think many foreigners will be interested in the CD? A: This edition has been created chiefly for them, and foreign visitors will be more interested than people simply looking for gifts for their guests. Yes, Georgians can give it as a gift to foreign visitors, but if they are informed, they [foreigners] will buy our product themselves. Q: Will the CDs be distributed only in Georgia, or elsewhere as well, and if so, where? A: All our multimedia editions are now being distributed in New York City.
